What is an AI SDR?

An AI SDR is software that does the top-of-funnel work of a sales development rep — finding prospects, qualifying them, and writing a first message for each — with a human approving what sends. Here's how it works.

An AI SDR (AI sales development representative) is software that automates the top of the sales funnel — finding prospects, scoring how well they fit your ideal customer profile, and drafting a personalized first message for each one — while a human stays in control of what actually gets sent. It is not a chatbot and it is not a mail-merge tool. The distinguishing trait is that every message is written from the individual prospect's profile, not filled into a template.

What an AI SDR actually does

A capable AI SDR covers four jobs a human SDR spends most of their day on:

  1. Prospecting — searching for people who match your target profile.
  2. Qualifying — judging fit so you don't waste outreach on poor matches. In NudgeLink this is a 0–100 fit score with written reasoning for each lead.
  3. Personalizing — writing a first-touch message grounded in that specific person's role, company, and background.
  4. Following up — sequencing polite follow-ups, and falling back to email when there's no reply.

What it does not do (if it's built responsibly)

  • It doesn't send without your sign-off. In NudgeLink every draft goes to an approval queue — nothing leaves until a human approves it.
  • It doesn't invent facts to flatter a prospect. Messages are grounded in the real profile and your real offer.
  • It doesn't blast at machine speed. A safe AI SDR paces itself like a careful human — see How to do LinkedIn outreach without getting restricted.

Why "AI" changes the outcome

Templated automation scales volume. An AI SDR scales relevance — the same one-to-one reasoning a good rep applies, applied to every lead. That's the whole point: a message that reads like it was written for one person, at the volume of software.
